My current series is about
dwelling. It is about the fundamental sensations of being in the world, about the cross currents and pathways
that lead us to where we are and where we are going that extend laterally
across geography, and also the layers that extend vertically into memory and
the depths of consciousness. The work is also about gesture and the way things resonate with,
approach and touch each other. It is about the nesting of worlds within each
other and the simultaneity of diverse experiences in the same place.
I enjoy the freedom to
combine images of interior and exterior space, containment and flight, and the
vast and the intimate. I am in awe of the fundamental phenomena of the straight
and the curved and how one can become the other through shifts in
perspective. In my previous work
with naturalistic landscape, I captured the magic of light, frequently
seeking out intense contrasts between light and dark. Now the tonal shifts are
connected to internal landscape - deep memory and hidden forces, promise and
possibility – as well as evocations of exterior terrain.
I build these
dialectical relationships into a texture of closely woven tiny marks on a wood surface to suggest
the cohabitation of our intimate nesting places with the immensity of our inner
lives.
